Our porcelain

GOLDFINGER porcelain mugs

Why have porcelain at home?

From a purely technical point of view, porcelain is the finest material you can give your tableware.

It is the hardest and most abrasion-resistant, and it is completely safe for food, because it is vitrified – which means it does not absorb liquids, and so nothing can leach out of it into your food or drink. But that is only one point of view. There is also design, and here porcelain offers more than many other materials.

Thanks to the quality of the material and its design, it can be a companion that will stay with you for a lifetime if treated well. A lot of things change, and not always for the better, but you can start your day with a cup of coffee or tea in the company of a familiar friend – a porcelain mug that you chose yourself and are fond of.

Handmade porcelain production in the GOLDFINGER manufactory

About our products

Our cups are made of Czech porcelain, a material of the highest quality. Production is carried out by hand with the greatest care. We fire our pieces at 1380 °C in a reducing atmosphere.

Porcelain is usually produced industrially in enormous runs. Our batches are in the hundreds of pieces, so the chance that you would spot the very same mug you can buy from us while visiting your neighbours is truly minimal.

A large share of handwork and interesting design – that is what sets us apart from the rest.

Caring for GOLDFINGER porcelain

How to care for porcelain

Porcelain is a very hard and abrasion-resistant material. It withstands everyday use and there is no need to worry about washing it in the dishwasher, as long as the chosen decoration allows it.

For decoration we use on-glaze or in-glaze colours, which are fired at 800 °C or 1200 °C. Some pieces are decorated with metal salts under the glaze. These decorations are very durable and pieces decorated this way can be washed in the dishwasher and used in the microwave.

Pieces decorated with gold or platinum, on the other hand, are delicate to look after, and for those we recommend careful hand washing. If a piece is decorated with gold or platinum only partially, hand washing still always applies.

How we decorate

Decorating porcelain with colours

With colours

For decoration we use on-glaze or in-glaze colours, which are fired at 800 °C or 1200 °C. We apply the colours with a brush or use screen-printed decals. After firing, the colours are food-safe and are tested for it.

Decorating porcelain with metal salts under the glaze

With metal salts under the glaze

Decorating with salts under the glaze is an old, typically porcelain technique. It uses solutions of metal chlorides (salts) that carry colour – such as cobalt, chromium and iron, but also gold, which fires to a pink shade.

The metal salts are applied to the biscuit-fired body, after which the piece is glazed and fired again. This is how we achieve the soft contours of the decoration on the piece, the so-called “watercolour bleed”. This decoration is very durable and there is no need to worry about washing the cups in the dishwasher. Using them in the microwave is not a problem either.

Decorating porcelain with gold and platinum

With gold or platinum on the glaze

Pure gold or platinum is used for the decoration, with no admixtures. A special precious-metal preparation is applied to the fired piece and then fired again at 800 °C.

Cups decorated with gold are delicate to look after, and we recommend careful hand washing.

Eco-friendly porcelain production

Porcelain was and is eco-friendly

The body used to make our porcelain comes from the Czech Republic and is substantially recycled. When the body is prepared, recyclate serves as an input material – both waste from the first firing and ground-up waste from the glost firing.

And above all – porcelain lasts!

The stories behind our mugs

Golden hand porcelain mug

Fancy a pair of golden hands?

Skilful people are said to have hands of gold. Whether you are one of them, or you are rather the type who could break even an anvil, either way you can have golden hands at home – made of porcelain.

Chameleon Blue and Gray porcelain mug

About the chameleon

A chameleon is a most peculiar creature: each eye looks in a different direction, it sees everything and says nothing. A porcelain chameleon can be your faithful companion over a cup of tea, and it will certainly keep quiet about everything it learns.

Hummingbird Pink porcelain mug

Hummingbird

The hummingbird is a beautiful little bird that we in Europe are denied, as it lives only in the Americas. If you would rather not accept this injustice – and neither would we – there is a solution: bring home a porcelain hummingbird.

Deer porcelain mug

Deer

In an old Czech fairy tale, a deer with golden antlers is the one thing the wicked forest hags truly fear. We have nothing to worry about, because we have plenty of deer with golden antlers – but consider your own situation: are you sufficiently protected against forest hags? Ideal above all for anyone who has ever needed rescuing.

Diamond

For friends of geometry, who know that geometry is the foundation of everything – and that whatever it is not the foundation of is not worth the attention – there is the Diamond line: crystalline geometry made of quartz, feldspar and kaolin.
